The impact of working as a crisis counselor on mindset and beliefs

Crisis  Text  Line  is  a nonprofit  that  trains  volunteers  to  become  Crisis  Counselors and provide mental health counseling to texters in crisis. We are partnering with them to understand the impact that being a crisis counselor has on one’s beliefs, mindsets and life pathways.

For instance, do crisis counselors develop more idealistic or skeptical views about the political system? Do they exhibit shifts  in  mindsets  around  policies  on  mental  health  or  criminal  justice,  or  the  role  of  first  respondents? Are  they  more  likely  to  pursue  careers  in  public  service?  Do  they become more empathetic? We’re designing a randomized controlled trial that we plan to implement in the spring of 2021.
